Football Announces 2006 Signing Class



CONWAY, SC – Coastal Carolina University has signed 15 to National Letters of Intent to play football for the Chanticleers next fall, head coach David Bennett announced today. This is the fifth recruiting class for Bennett and the Chants, who are two-time defending Big South Conference champions. Coastal is 25-8 in its three years of play in Division I-AA, including an 8-4 mark in league play.

Of the signees, Coastal remained in the southeast, signing five each from South Carolina and North Carolina, four from Georgia and one from Florida.

Led the state with 103 receptions for 1,839 yards and 21 touchdowns, earning Associated Press and High School Sports Report Class AAAA All-State honoree... Helped Byrnes win its fourth straight Class 4A, Division II title this year and a 58-2 record during his four years... Was on the victorious North team in the SCADA North/South All-Star Game... Was a four-year starter for the Yellow Jackets... Earned Piedmont Triad 3-A All-Conference honors his junior and senior years... Rated as the top defensive player in his conference by the NC Prep Sports Report and named one of the players to watch by the News-Record.... Ran a 4.38 40-yard dash in the 2005 Shrine Bowl Combine at Jamestown with a 30-inch vertical jump... Helped Carver to the 2002 state title.

Stephen Culbertson DB 6-1 187 Belton, S.C/Belton-Honea

Two-year starter at Belton-Honea... Was a key part of the Bears 15-0 season his junior year and their 2004 Class AAA championship... Had nine interceptions at free safety in 2004, helping the defense limit opponents to just 5.3 points per game... Also played wide receiver during high school, posting six catches for 146 yards and one touchdown his senior season.

Dominique Davenport DB 5-11 185 Bonaire, Ga./Warner Robins

Was a three-year letterwinner at Warner Robins, finishing as No. 4 on the career interceptions chart with 12... For his career, recorded 162 tackles, five tackles-for-loss, two fumble recoveries and one touchdown... Also had 55 rushes for 317 yards and 14 receptions for 288 yards and five combined touchdowns... As a senior recorded 60 tackles, five interceptions, one fumble recovery and one touchdown, earning Honorable Mention All-State honors from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution... Was also honored as First Team All-Middle Georgia and All-Houston County... Selected to play in the Georgia All-Star game and earned the Team's MVP award... Also averaged 36 yards per punt his final season... Selected to the 2005 Preseason Academic All-State team... Was a key part of the 2004 squad that won the Regional 3-AAAA and State AAAA titles, as he was named All-State that year by the Georgia Sports Writers Association after posting 92 tackles and seven interceptions.

Scott Fambrough TE 6-3 220 Dunwoody, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian

Named Class AA First Team All-State by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution after recording 34 catches for 490 yards and six touchdowns... Honorable Mention Class AA All-State selection by the Georgia Sports Writers Association... Earned First Team All-County honors as well... Played on the defensive side of the ball as well, recording 58 tackles... Also was a pitcher and outfielder for the Spartans...

Sean Fortson Ath. 6-1 180 Kannapolis, N.C./A.L. Brown

Led the Wonders to a 13-2 overall record, the No. 4 seed and the state semifinals in the N.C. 3-AA State playoffs... Led an offense that combined for almost 300 yards per game... Had 126 rushes for 840 yards (6.7 yards per carry) and 11 touchdowns, along with throwing 52-for-98 for 675 yards and seven touchdowns... Had a season best game in the 19-14 home win over Concord when he rushed for 169 yards and all three touchdowns... Also returned nine kickoffs for 267 yards, averaging 29.7 yards per return... Threw for more than 1,000 yards his junior season...

Kerebi Gause DL 6-0 260 Conway, S.C./Conway (Georgia Military College)

Spent the last two seasons at Georgia Military College and will have two years of eligibility remaining... Helped the Bulldogs to a 9-2 mark, a win in the Golden Isles Bowl and their 2005 NJCAA National Runner-Up finish... Was a 2003 WPDE All-Zone selection The Sun News "Toast of the Coast" Defensive Player of the Year and a 2003 Shrine Bowl selection after recording 94 tackles, six sacks and forced two fumbles, recovered another fumble and had a pass breakup his senior year at Conway... Also piled up over 900 yards and 11 TD's for head coach Chuck Jordan... Was a three-year starter, leading the Tigers to three state finals...

Class AAAA All-State selection by the High School Sports Report and an Honorable Mention All-State pick by The State... 2005 WPDE-TV Zoneman finalist, finishing as runner-up in the voting... Selected to represent South Carolina in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas... Rated 22nd in the state by the Herald-Journal and 16th by the High School Sports Report... Rushed for 918 yards on 142 carries (6.5 yards per carry) and 11 touchdowns... Also recorded 26 tackles on defense... His brother Andre and cousin George both played at South Carolina.

Three-year letterwinner and two-year starter at Spruce Creek... Named First Team All-Area, All-Conference and All-District his senior season, playing at right guard for the second consecutive year... Two-year starter and three-year letterwinner at Dudley... Named All-Conference and Conference Defensive Player of the Year after recording 101.5 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, nine sacks and 11 hurries his senior year... Added two pass breakups, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one blocked kick... Also had 10 catches for 99 yards and three touchdowns as a tight end.

Named Honorable Mention All-Dekalb County and All-Area his senior season after helping the Jaguars to the Class AAAAA semifinals... Had 99 tackles, four interceptions, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, six pass breakups, one touchdown and one safety caused as a senior... Recorded 90 tackles, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries and five pass breakups as junior for Stephenson, earning All-Area Honorable Mention and the team's Defensive Back of the Year accolades... Had 75 tackles, three interceptions, four fumble recoveries and one touchdown his sophomore for the Jaguars to garner All-County honors... A three-year letterwinner in track as a sprinter... As a junior helped the squad to an 8-3 record, including a 5-1 region record, and a berth in the state playoffs for the first time since 1986... Also a two-year starter on the Spartans' basketball team, leading them to the state playoffs last season as their second leading scorer...
