2010 College Sporting News Sweet 63 All-America Team
CONWAY - Coastal Carolina senior long snapper Danny Bonifas (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork HS) was named to the College Sporting News Sweet 63 Football Championship Subdivision All-America team.
Bonifas, who was also named first team All-Big South this past season, has served as the Chanticleers' starting short snapper (PAT and field goals) for four years and long snapper (punts) for a year and a half. He played a key role in the career and season success of placekicker Justin Durham, who leaves Coastal as the school's all-time leader in field goals made (42) and field goal percentage (.636). This season, Bonifas recovered a fumble covering a punt in the Chants' upset win over Liberty and was credited with a solo tackle at Presbyterian. With Bonifas at the trigger, Coastal did not experience one bad snap the entire 2010 season.
The CSN All-America team differs from all other honor squads in that it is designed like an actual team that could take the field and play in an actual game. It has everything from quarterbacks, running backs, receivers and a full defense to a complete special teams unit that includes a long snapper. This is also the first year that the CSN All-America squad has featured 63 players, a number that signifies the amount of scholarships available to teams at the FCS level. (Last season, Coastal fullback Tommy Fraser and corner back Josh Norman made the CSN Fabulous 50.)
Bonifas joins David Duran was an All-American honoree for 2010. Duran, one of the nation's top tight ends, was named second All-American by Phil Steele. The two mark Coastal Carolina's 14th and 15th All-American honorees.
