CONWAY - Coastal Carolina junior Niccolo Mastromatteo was named to the 2012 College Sports Journal FCS All-Academic Team, one of 42 student-athletes to make the inaugural team.
Mastromatteo (Ortonville, Mich.) owns a perfect 4.0 GPA and made the squad as a punt returner. He ranked 13th in the NCAA and led the Big South, with his average of 11.36 yards per punt return. Mastromatteo was named All-Big South as a punt returner for a third time this past fall, earning first team honors in 2012, while adding second team all-league recognition as a wide receiver.
Mastromatteo is the Big South and CCU all-time leader in both punt returns (61) and punt return yards (538). This past year, he was named the CollegeFootballPerformanceAwards.com National Punt Returner of the Week as he had three returns for 98 yards at Presbyterian, including an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown. It marked the second-longest punt return in CCU and Big South history (Mastromatteo also owns the longest punt return with a 91-yarder in 2010) and the third-longest scoring play in school history. As a wide receiver, Mastromatteo had an 81-yard touchdown at Gardner-Webb to mark the longest pass play in school history and the eighth-longest scoring play in school history.
Previously, Mastromatteo was named the 15th Annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star Team.
