CONWAY, SC Coastal Carolina University football redshirt sophomore Josh Hoke (Statesville, N.C./West Iredell) was named to the Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team, announced by the DI-AA ADA.
Coming off an ACL injury in Spring 2004, Hoke was named First Team All-Big South kicker after leading the Big South in total points with 83 and ranking second in scoring average at 7.5 points per game. He finished 35th in the nation in field goals (0.91 per game) and scoring (7.55 ppg). He led all Big South kickers in PAT percentage, converting 53-of-54 extra point attempts for a 98.1 percent rating, setting new league records in both the attempts and made. He was also the top field goal kicker at 71.4 percent, hitting a league-best 10 field goals. Hoke set a new league record with 16 points in the win over North Greenville, earning National and Big South Special Teams Player of the Week honors, en route to becoming the first kicker in league history to score more than 100 career points, currently with 138.
He was named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week three times during Coastal's 10-1 season, earning the weekly honor for his play against North Greenville (Sept. 25), Charleston (WV) (Oct. 9) and Savannah State (Nov. 6). He was also a member of the Big South's All-Academic Squad in 2004.
Hoke carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average through his first two years at Coastal, majoring in communications. He also is a part-time sports reporter during the offseason for The Sun News, Myrtle Beach's local newspaper.
Hoke was selected to the 36 member Division I-AA Academic All-Star Team from a pool of 86 eligible nominees. In order to be eligible for the squad, players are required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. They must have reached their second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. They must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his designated position.
