CCU Opens SBC Play Hosting UTA

Conway - The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team will jump into its second season of Sun Belt Conference action when they host Texas Arlington Friday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m.

The Mavericks being a 9-4 record into the game and with it, the preseason pick to win the Sun Belt Conference.

UTA has two of the top players in the conference in reigning Sun Belt Player of the Year Kevin Hervey and point guard Eric Neal.

Hervey not only leads UTA in scoring, but the Sun Belt as well averaging 23.8 points per game. His 9.3 rebounds per game is second in the conference.

Neal runs the Mavericks offense which is averaging 78.5 points per game. Neal’s 13 points per game average is 17th in the conference, but it is his league-leading 9.1 assists per game which pushes the UTA offense.

CCU (6-7) will be looking to stop a two-game losing streak against the Mavericks. One could look at the results on the CCU schedule and notice all of the close losses that have haunted the Chants.

Of CCU’s seven losses, two have come by six points (Lamar, Wofford), one by four points (Wake Forest) and three by two points (Lamar, Charleston, South Carolina).

The Chanticleers have been led in scoring all season by Zac Cuthbertson, whose 17.9 points per game scoring average leads CCU and is fifth in the conference.

The junior is also eighth in rebounding (7.9), eighth in free throw percentage (.800) and sixth in blocked shots (1.3).

Jaylen Shaw is having another banner campaign this season. His 16 points per game average is second on the team and 10th in the Sun Belt. He is also third in assists (5.0), 11th in free throw percentage (.769), and third in steals (1.8).

CCU has also had a strong bench all season led by Demario Beck and Artur Labinowicz. Beck is averaging 10.8 points per game and his .568 field goal percentage is eighth in the league. Beck also averages 6.6 rebounds per game.

Labinowicz averages 9.8 points per game and 4.5 rebounds. He has 25 assists on the season to go along with his eight blocked shots and six steals.
