Coastal Carolina senior forward Mike Holmes was selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Basketball Player of the Week the conference announced Monday.
Holmes turned in two outstanding performances last week to help the Chanticleers post a pair of non-conference victories and run their winning streak to seven games.
Coastal opened the week with a 78-69 overtime win at LSU that saw the Chants snap a 37-game losing streak to BCS schools. Holmes made his debut for the Chants and posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two blocked shots.
He went on to score 16 points, grab seven rebounds and hit a career-high eight free throws on Saturday in the Chants' 59-58 win over East Carolina. The Bishopville, S.C., native hit a pair of clutch free throws with under a minute left to play Saturday to give Coastal its first lead since the 8:19 mark of the second half.
After East Carolina regained the lead with a three-pointer on the other end, Holmes collected an offensive rebound off a missed free throw and muscled up a layup to put the Chants ahead again. Coastal would go on to defeat the Pirates in the final seconds on a floater from sophomore guard Kierre Greenwood.
For the week, Holmes averaged 15.0 points and 8.5 rebounds and shot 45.5 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from the free throw line.
Holmes is the second Chanticleer to be named the Big South Men's Basketball Player of the Week this season. Desmond Holloway earned the distinction earlier in the year after averaging 20.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game over a four-game stretch in November.
