Men's Hoops Loses at UNC Wilmington, 79-50

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Coastal Carolin men’s basketball team fell to UNC Wilmington, 79-50, Saturday, Dec. 17. The Chanticleers are now 3-4 while the Seahawks advance to 8-2.

In the first half, forward Chad Ferguson struck first for CCU after almost two minutes of play for a quick 2-0 lead, but UNCW quickly responded with a three-point shot from guard John Goldsberry. A close 5-5 game was soon ended when the Seahawks controlled the game and gained a 12-7 lead they would never relinquish. The Chants closed in after a three-point from guard Jack Leasure which cut the UNCW lead to 12-10 game and guard Pele Paelay’s free throw made it 12-11 with 14:22 to go in the half. UNCW then broke open a close game with a 12-2 run over the next 2:29 to build a 24-13 lead. After the lead was cut to seven at 26-19 with 7:59 to go, the Seahawks closed out the half on a 15-5 run and took a 41-24 lead into the halftime lockerroom.

UNC Wilmington outrebounded Coastal 22-11 in the first half and outshot the Chanticleers, hitting on 50.0 percent (16-for-32) from the field, while CCU was just 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from the floor. Coastal also committed 10 turnovers that UNCW turned into 13 points.

In the second half, the Seahawks extended the lead, pushing it to 22 at 50-28 with 15:30 to go in the contest. The Chants continued to fight, going on a 9-2 run over the next 4:20 to cut the lead to 15 at 52-37, but that was as close as Coastal would get for the remainder of the game. UNCW pushed the lead out thoughout the remainder of the game, finishing with their biggest lead of the game at the end of 29 points.

The Seahawks were even better from the floor in the second half, hitting on 60.9 percent (14-for-23) from the floor, finishing the game at 54.5 percent (30-for-55). Coastal hit just 40.5 percent (17-for-42) on its shots and were outrebounded 37-23 for the game.

Paeley led the Chants effort with team highs of 14 points and five rebounds, while Leasure added 12 points, all on three-pointers, two rebounds, and two assists. Ferguson finished the game with 10 points.

Goldsberry led the way for the Seahawks’ victory with 17 points, including going 4-for-5 from the three point line. Guard Daniel Fountain added 12 points, while forward Vladimir Kuljanin chipped in 11 in the Seahawks victory.

Coastal will now return back to Conway for a 7 p.m. game against Chowan Monday Dec. 19.
