Men's Basketball Handles Brevard, 85-46

CONWAY, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina men's basketball squad extended its home winning streak to nine games with a resounding 85-46 victory over visiting Brevard, Dec. 16. With the win, the Chanticleers evened their record to 4-4 on the year, while the Tornados dropped their second straight game to a Division I opponent and fell to 3-8.

Coastal dominated the game in the early going and throughout the first half, holding the visitors scoreless for the first six minutes of the game while posting the first 11 points of the contest. CCU continued the push, behind 18 first half points from senior forward Moses Sonko (E. Greenwich, R.I./Classical), going on a 29-11 run the remainder of the half to take a 40-13 halftime lead.

The margin was extend to as many as 42 in the second half at 76-34 with 4:26 to play, with the reserves seeing a majority of the playing time in the second half.

CCU shot 56.5 percent from the field (35-of-62), while limiting the Tornados to just 30.0 percent (15-of-50). The Chants dominated the glass 45-20, including 12 offensive rebounds that were converted into 16 points. Coastal also got out in transition effectively, outscoring the visitors 25-4 in fast break points.

The Chanticleers were led in scoring by Sonko with 22, as all 15 players scored and 13 of them got in the scoring column. Off the bench, sophomore Matt Brennan (Lee's Summitt, Mo./Lee's Summit North) chipped in eight points, while juniors Chad Ferguson (North Las Vegas, Nev./Cheyenne) and Everage Richardson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Washington Irving (Sullivan County CC))contributed seven and six, resepectively. Brevard was led by Brain Davison with 15 points, while Jeff Carbuhn had 13.

Coastal is back on the court this Monday, Dec. 18, hosting the Bojangles' Basketball Bash at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The Chanticleers will host the College of Charleston at 8:30 p.m., following the CCU women taking on No. 2 North Carolina at 6 p.m.
