CONWAY, S.C. Charleston Southern University's men's basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Coastal Carolina University with a 78-69 victory on Saturday night in Kimbel Arena. Charleston Southern improves to 12-16 overall and 8-6 in the Big South, while the Chanticleers fall to 8-19 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
After Coastal Carolina held a brief lead in the opening minutes of the first half, Charleston Southern took the game over and led by double digits just after the midway point of the first period. Leading 17-15 with 12:22 on the clock, the Buccaneers stormed to a 19-point advantage with 1:59 on the clock with a 22-5 run. The Chanticleers' Derrick Robinson scored seven points in a 9-1 Coastal run to close the gap to 41-29 by halftime.
Charleston Southern built its largest lead of the contest of 21 points at 50-29 just 2:33 into play. Coastal Carolina began to slowly chip away at the lead and used a 10-4 run to pull to within four points at 67-63 with 1:15 to play. The Chants would get no closer as Charleston Southern connected on 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the final 1:10 to secure the victory.
Chris Warzynski came off of the bench to score a team-high 16 points and added eight rebounds for the Buccaneers. Charles White posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Bucs, while Ed O'Neil dished out 10 assists.
Kelvin Coggins led all scorers with 21 points to pace Coastal Carolina as he connected on 11-of-14 from the free throw line. Derrick Robinson added 16 points and six rebounds for the Chants.
