Men's Hoops Dominates Southern Virginia, 104-62

CONWAY, SC – Coastal Carolina's men's basketball team jumped out to a 24-1 lead in the first eight minutes and never looked back en route to a dominating 104-62 home victory over Southern Virginia, Nov. 29. With their third consecutive win and 17th home win in the last 18, the Chanticleers moved to 3-2 on the year while the Knights dropped to 4-8.

Coastal got the first four points of the game on layups by forward Moses Sonko (East Greenwich, R.I./Classical) and guard Everage Richardson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Washington Irving (Sullivan County CC)) followed by a free throw by SVU's Dustin Estes to make it 4-1 with 16:11 remaining in the half. From there, the Chants took over, going on a 20-0 run over the next 3:58, including five layups, to put the game away early. CCU maintained the 23-point lead at the intermission, 52-29, and built it throughout the second half, with the biggest lead the final margin of 42.

The Chants hit on 48.7 percent (38-of-78) of their shots from the field and converted 20-of-27 free throw attempts. Southern Virginia was just 31.0 percent (18-of-58) from the floor, including 10-of-35 from the three-point arc, while converting 16-for-25 at the charity stripe. Two major differences were rebounding, with CCU holding a 55-34 advantage, including 19 offense rebounds for 26 points, and SVU's 25 turnovers that were converted into 39 Chanticleer points. Coastal also got out in transition, outscoring the visitors 30-7 on the fast break.

All 15 Coastal players got in the scoring column, led by Sonko's second double-double of the year with 16 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. Richardson had 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while guards Jack Leasure (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and Joshua Mack (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights) contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. Mack also had seven assists, while Leasure had five assists and four steals. The Knights were led by Tanner Johnson's 19 points, while Cameron Gentry was the only other SVU player in double figures with 13.

Coastal will take the next 10 days off for finals before returning to the floor on Sun., Dec. 10 at Jacksonville. The game, to be played at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in downtown Jacksonville, will tip off at 6:30 p.m.
