GREENSBORO, NC The Coastal Carolina mens basketball squad struggled from the floor early on and could not overcome it, falling to host UNC Greesnboro, 79-73, Nov. 23. With the loss, the Chanticleers drop to 0-3 on the young season, while UNCG advances to 2-0.
UNCG jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first five minutes, sparked by Ronnie Burrell and Ricky Hickman with four points each. The Spartans built the lead to 14 with 7:21 to play in the first half when Coastal made a surge, cutting the lead to 32-22 with 2:10 left in the half. However, UNCG made a 7-2 run to close out the period and led by 15 at the break, 39-24.
The Chants made a surge early in the second half, going on a 8-2 run in the opening 1:49 to cut into the lead, 41-32. After UNCG built it back to a 13-point margin at 53-40, the Chants made a major surge and trailed by just four at 58-54 with 7:32 to play. The Spartans then put together a 7-0 run in just 47 seconds to push the lead back to 11 at the 6:45 mark. CCU did close to within nine at 72-63 with 1:22 to play and could get no closer than six with several late three-pointers.
The Chanticleers were led by junior Pele Paelay, who tallied 22 points. Sophomore Adrian Gross added a career-high 13 points and freshman Jack Leasure chipped in 15. UNCG was led by Hickman with 22 points, while Burrell and Josh Gross scored 15 points apiece.
Coastal will travel across five time zones for its next action, taking on host Hawaii, Fri., Nov. 26 at 8:05 p.m. Hawaiian Standard Time. The Chanticleers will play two games in the Aloha state, also taking on Chaminade, Sun., Nov. 28 at 2 p.m.
