Yale Outlasts Coastal Carolina 70-65 To Win Pepsi/Marist Classic
Marist falls 82-62 to Eastern Michigan in Consolation Game.
Poughkeepsie, NY - The Yale University Bulldogs held off a series of late rallies from Coastal Carolina to earn a 70-65 win in the Championship Game of the 18th annual Pepsi/Marist Classic at the McCann Center. Eastern Michigan captured the consolation game, defeating host Marist College, 82-62.
Tournament Most Valuable Player, Edwin Draughan, notched four free throws and a defensive rebound in the final 39 seconds to help seal the title. He scored 18 points, and added five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the game. All-Tournament Team member Dominick Martin scored 19 points, to go along with six boards for the Bulldogs, 2-1.
Yale led by as many as 11 points in the first-half, 23-12 with 8:22 to play, but Coastal Carolina (1-1) clawed back to force a 30-30 tie at the intermission. E.J. Gallup tallied all of his five first-half points in the final 47 seconds of the first, including a three-pointer at the buzzer. Gallup, who finished with 12 in the game, was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammate Brandon Newby, who scored 19 in the outing.
In the consolation game, Eastern Michigan (1-1) took the lead for good with 14:01 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Michael Ross. Leading 35-22 at the intermission, the Eagles shot 58.1 percent from the floor in the second half on their way to the win. Markus Austin, who scored a tournament-high 29 points in the first game of the tournament, tallied 12 in the consolation, to earn All-Tournament Team honors.
Pierre Monagan led the Red Foxes with 15 points in the consolation game, and combined with his first round efforts, was also named to the All-Tournament Team. Marist, 0-3, shot 38.8 percent from the field for the game, and just 8.7 percent, 2-23, from behind the three-point line.
