CONWAY, S.C. – A near capacity crowd packed Kimbel Arena and watched the Coastal Carolina basketball teams usher in the 2010-11 season Thursday night with the school’s annual Hoopla event.
Fans were treated to a mascot game that consisted of several local mascots from around the area to open the event. Chauncey stole the show and impressed the home crowd and was the only mascot to have more than one basket.
Both teams were introduced to the fans and head coaches Alan LeForce and Cliff Ellis addressed the crowd and thanked the students and community for such a great turnout.
The women’s team scrimmaged for 10 minutes and provided the fans with an idea of why LeForce is so excited about his team’s potential. The contest was tight and was decided by just three points at the final buzzer.
Coastal’s men team took over thereafter and entertained everyone with a dunk contest with contestants Brandon Crawford, Sam McLaurin and Desmond Holloway. After two rounds, Holloway emerged as the champion after a pair of high-flying jams.
The men capped the night with a scrimmage of their own that included countless dunks and dazzling plays throughout the course of the game. Preseason All-Big South selection Chad Gray served up several dunks that brought the crowd to their feet.
Coastal opens the season Nov. 12 when the Chanticleers host a doubleheader from Kimbel Arena. The women welcome Southern Virginia at 5 p.m., while the men follow against Piedmont College at 7:30 p.m.
