CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team began its preparation for the 2012-13 season with its first official practice of the year. The Chanticleers have won two regular season Big South Conference championships and been to three-straight postseasons over the last three seasons but will be looking to start fresh in a new building with many new faces.
The Chants return veteran guards Anthony Raffa and Kierre Greenwood who were both selected to the Preseason All-Big South Conference teams, but will be looking to fill some vacancies in the post. CCU has a senior, a junior-college transfer and five freshmen who will be looking to fill that void.
Joining Raffa and Greenwood in the backcourt are returners sophomore Warren Gillis and senior Charles Ashford. Richie Berry and Tre’von James will add depth to the backcourt while freshman Ron Trapps will spend his freshman season recovering from an injury.
Senior Bisi Addey is the lone veteran in the post while junior-transfer El Hadji Ndieguene is the only other big man with any college experience. A young a talented group will look to control the paint this season for the Chants as freshmen Michel Enanga, Uros Ljeskovic, Badou Diagne and Tristian Curtis join the team with hopes of early playing time.
“I like this freshmen class. I like this team,” said Head Coach Cliff Ellis. “We are kind of in a rebuilding mode on the front line. We have backcourt experience in (Anthony) Raffa and (Kierre) Greenwood, two guys that were predicted to be all-conference.”
The Chants opened their 2012-13 season in the old home as their first official practice took place in Kimbel Arena due to a home volleyball match inside The HTC Center. The team took full advantage of the new renovations inside Kimbel Arena that added four more baskets for a total of six.
“We have four seniors with a lot of experience and we are ready to help these young guys out,” said senior guard Anthony Raffa. “I have never been on a team with seven freshmen. We just need to come together and support them the whole way. They are young and don’t have a lot of college experience but we have some veteran guys that can help push them through.”
Coastal will continue to practice over the next month in preparation for their opening game of the season on Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. when the Chants welcome in The University of Akron for the inaugural game inside The HTC Center.
Season tickets for both men’s and women’s basketball are on sale now and can be purchased online at GoCCUSports.com or by calling 843-347-8499.
