CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s men’s basketball team, under first year head coach Cliff Ellis, has been chosen to finish fourth in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll, as voted by the League’s Head Coaches, Sports Information Directors and media panel, while senior guard Jack Leasure was named Preseason All-Big South. The announcements were made today at the Embassy Suites hotel in Concord, N.C., as part of the 2007-08 Basketball Tip-Off Media Luncheon.

High Point, which posted a second-place standing in the Big South last year at 11-3, edged out Winthrop for the No. 1 spot in the men’s preseason poll, finishing with 15 first-place votes and 216 points.  The Eagles, coming off a school- and Big South-record 29 wins and an NCAA Tournament first round win, received 14 first-place votes and 214 points.  VMI, last year’s national scoring leader and the Big South Tournament runner-up, was picked third with 147 points, followed by No. 4 Coastal Carolina (134 points).  UNC Asheville, which advanced to the Conference tournament semifinals last season, claimed the No. 5 spot with 119 points, while Liberty placed sixth in the voting with 108 points.  Charleston Southern was predicted seventh (63 points), followed by Radford in eighth (43 points).

Leasure has been a Conference honoree all three seasons at Coastal Carolina – All-Freshman in 2005, First-team All-Conference and Player of the Year in 2006 and Second-team All-Conference in 2007.  He led CCU to its second .500-or-better season last year for the first time since 1993-94, and became just the 14th player in CCU history to reach 1,000 points in his career (currently at 1,424).  Leasure enters his senior year third all-time in Big South history with 300 career three-pointers.  In 2006-07, he led Coastal and ranked seventh in the League at 15.6 points per game.  He also ranked in the top 10 in the Conference in three pointers (3.0 pg), three-point field goal percentage (.372), assists (3.6 pg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8).  He scored in double-figures in 12-of-14 League games last year and 25-of-30 games overall.

The men’s season begins Friday, Nov. 9 with the Chanticleers hosting North Greenville at 7 p.m. and culminates with the Advance Auto Parts Big South Basketball Championship the week of March 4-8.  The Championship game will again air live on ESPN’s family of networks Saturday, March 8.
