Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball alum Pele Paelay. has signed a professional contract with STB Le Havre, a team in the top league in France; it was announced on the basketball website Eurobasket Sept. 12
Paelay is coming off being named Co-Most Valuable Player of the Eurobasket Summer League in Las Vegas, Nev. Paelay played last year for the Great Falls Explorers in the Continental Basketball Association, where he averaged 16 points and 4.0 rebounds a contest. He also shot 53 percent from the field and 36 percent from beyond three-point range.
Paelay earned Big South Player of the Year and was an honorable mention Associated Press All-American after leading the League in scoring with 16.8 points per game average, while ranking second in Conference only games with a 17.5 average in 2004-05. He ranked sixth overall in rebounding (6.0), first in the Conference and 27th in the nation in steals (2.41) and 11th in assists (2.79). Paelay tied for the League-high with nine 20-point games, and recorded the highest scoring output of the season with a 38-point effort at VMI, Jan. 10. He was Coastal Carolina’s top scorer in 15 games and top rebounder 12 times his junior season, was one of just two Big South players to record two 20-point, 10-rebound games this season, and reached double-figures in scoring in 27 of 29 games, including all 16 Big South tilts. He helped the Chanticleers his senior season to the Big South Tournament championship game, averaging 14.8 points and 5.2 rebounds a contest. Paelay is 11th in Coastal Carolina history with 1,178 career points and eighth in free throws made (233).
Le Havre is in the top league of the Ligue Nationale de Basket (LNB). The first game for Le Havre and Paelay will be Oct. 4 against Hyeres-Toulon.
Coastal Carolina opens the 2008-09 season Saturday, Nov. 15 with a home match against Coker. Game time is at 7 p.m.
