CONWAY, SC - The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team has released its 2004-05 schedule today, Sept. 14, as announced by head coach Pete Strickland. The Chanticleers will host 13 games inside Kimbel Arena, including five in December.
The schedule is highlighted trips to the states of Indiana and Hawai'i for two games each. Coastal opens the 2004-05 slate with a road trip to take on Indiana State and Evansville, Nov. 19 and 21, respectively. After returning to the Carolinas to head to UNC Greensboro, the Chanticleers will travel across five time zones for the program's first trip to the islands under head coach Pete Strickland, as the Chants take on Hawai'i and Chaminade over the Thanksgiving holidays.
After the first five games away from home, Coastal Carolina will finally open the home slate against Eastern Kentucky, Sat., Dec. 4. Home games against Coker, Jacksonville State and UNC Wilmington line the next portion of the schedule before a game at the College of Charleston, Wed, Dec. 22, a rematch last year's thriller at Kimbel Arena won by the Cougars. Ohio Northern will make its first-ever appearance at CCU's campus on Wed., Dec. 29, before the Chants round out non-conference play at Tennessee, Sun., Jan. 2.
Big South Conference action is a battle every time on the court and 2004-05 is expected to be more of the same. The Chants open the league slate, Wed., Jan. 5, with rival Winthrop coming to Kimbel Arena, a place that CCU is 17-9 over the last two seasons. Coastal will then hit the road to take on Radford and VMI in the opening road trip of conference play. CCU will play three of its last five league foes on the road, but the Chanticleers wrap up league play with a pair of home games against Charleston Southern (Feb. 21) and the 2003 regular season co-champion Birmingham Southern (Feb. 26). This year, all nine teams will playing for eight spots in the 2005 Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Tournament, which will be played at the home sites of the higher seeds, Mar. 1, 3 and 5.
"It is always a challenging schedule, but the schedule does not look quite as daunting with the strong senior leadership that returns to this year's squad," Strickland said. "We continue to look for a chance to broaden our horizons, both on the floor and in experiencing different parts of the country.
"I don't know why we have to travel cross country to Hawaii, when we live in Myrtle Beach," Strickland said jokingly. "But my assistant coaches convinced me that it would be a good experience for our kids and it will give us an opportunity to face a quality Top 25 program. I also hope to play Tennessee the same day that their football team appears in a bowl game to lessen the home court advantage."
Also announced today by Strickland are the co-captains for the 2004-05 season in seniors Alvin Green and Clint Nagel. Green started 24 of 27 games he played in last year and is the leading returning scorer at 7.1 points per game. Nagel played in all 29 contests last year for Coastal, starting 17 of them and averaging 3.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
"These two understand where are program has been and where we are trying to go," Strickland concluded. "They have been dedicated to this program, both on and off the floor, and have already shown a lot of leadership in the early part of the school year. I know they will do a great job leading the team this season."
