July 17, 2013
CONWAY - Coastal Carolina is one of 12 men's basketball teams that will lace up its sneakers and compete in the 2013 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational. The Chanticleers head to Minneapolis, Minn., on Nov. 19 to face Big Ten Conference member Minnesota.
After traveling to Minnesota, Coastal Carolina will host the Regional Games as part of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational on Nov. 23-24 at The HTC Center. The two-day, four-game event will bring Louisiana, Oakland and St. Francis Brooklyn to Conway.
"We are excited to be part of such a great tournament as the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational and to be part of a select group of schools chosen to host the Regional Games," said Coastal Carolina University Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek. "We look forward to playing a tradition-rich Minnesota team during the Opening Games and then showcasing the Regional Games on our home court."
"It's an honor to be associated with such a prestigious tournament as the Maui Invitational," said Coastal Carolina head coach Cliff Ellis. "Playing one of our first games of the season at Minnesota will be a great test for our program. We're also very excited to bring the Regional Games and three very good programs to our campus for the Mainland portion of the tournament."
The format of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational includes four Mainland Teams in addition to the eight teams bound for Hawaii, called the Island Teams. The Island Teams will continue with the traditional three-day tournament played at Maui's Lahaina Civic Center. The Island Teams include Arkansas, Baylor, California, Dayton, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Syracuse and host Chaminade. This final stage of the tournament is known as the Championship Round.
Prior to the Championship Round, seven of the eight Island Teams (Chaminade not included) will host Mainland Teams in what are known as the Opening Games. Louisiana, Oakland, St. Francis Brooklyn, along with Coastal, comprise the Mainland Teams.
The four Mainland Teams will then travel to The HTC Center on Nov. 23-24 to take part in the Regional Games. The Chanticleers will take on St. Francis Brooklyn on Nov. 23 in its first Regional Game while Oakland squares off against Louisiana. The winner from each game will play in the championship contest on Nov. 24, preceded by the consolation game.
