CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team will welcome in Kyle Buffkin as part of the 2013 class, head coach Cliff Ellis announced on Wednesday.
Previous School: Fork Union Military Academy
Buffkin is a 6-10 forward/center from Matthews, N.C., and will join the Chanticleers as a freshman. Buffkin spent one season at Fork Union Military Academy, which was also the prep home of current CCU guard Ron Trapps. He averaged 10.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game at FUMA while leading the team to a 19-10 record.
Prior to Fork Union, Buffkin attended Union Academy and averaged 12 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks per game as a senior while leading his team to the state tournament. He shot better than 50 percent (117-of-232) from the field and scored 17 or more points on six occasions and tallied 12 double-doubles, as well as the school's first-ever triple-double when he booked 28 points, 19 rebounds and 11 blocks against local rival Piedmont. Buffkin finished second in the state in blocked shots (119), while also leading both the Rocky River Conference and Union County in that statistic. He was named all-county and all-conference.
“We are very excited to welcome Kyle Buffkin to the Coastal Carolina program,” said Ellis. “He is a quality young man from a military school background so we can expect him to have great discipline and character. He has tremendous upside and can run the floor well for a big man. He has good hands and feet and can finish around the rim with either hand.”
