CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team completed its 2010-11 signing class when Charles Ashford singed a national letter intent to play basketball for the Chanticleers head coach Cliff Ellis announced Tuesday.
A 6-foot-1 guard, Ashford will arrive at Coastal after playing one season at Vincennes University under head coach Todd Franklin. Ashford averaged 12.9 point, 7.1 assists and 4.2 rebounds on his way to being named a NJCAA honorable mention All-American.
Ashford also ranked ninth in the nation in assists and helped the Trailblazers to an 18-13 record last season.
A native of Lexington, Ky., Ashford played high school basketball at Bryan Station with Butler standout Shelvin Mack. He began his junior college career at Southeastern Illinois College before opting to transfer to Vincennes University in Indiana.
“What we like about him is he’s got the ability to distribute the ball, and he’s got a good assist-to-turnover ratio, but he shoots the ball really well,” Ellis said. “I feel like he’ll make an immediate impact, and we are just very excited about having him.”
Ashford joins Tyler Poole, Warren Gillis and William Kirksey as members of the 2010-11 Chanticleer signing class.
