CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina senior forward Chad Gray was tabbed a CollegeHoops.net Honorable Mention All-America the publication announced Tuesday.
Gray finished the season ranked eighth in the Big South in scoring with 14.6 points per game and turned in nine games with at least 20 points. He also ended the season ninth in the conference with 6.3 rebounds per game and was one of only three players in the conference to rank in the top 10 in both scoring and rebounding.
Gray also proved to be one of the top defenders in the Big South, ranking seventh in the league with 1.2 blocked shots per game. He recorded 42 rejections this season and now sits in sixth place all-time at Coastal Carolina on the single-season blocked shots list.
At the end of the regular season, Gray earned a spot on the All-Big South first team for the second straight year and was later named to the Big South All-Tournament Team after averaging 20.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game during the tournament.
The Kingstree, S.C., native also played an instrumental role in helping Coastal Carolina turn in one of the greatest seasons in school history. The Chanticleers finished the season with a 28-6 overall record and tied the school record for the most wins in school history. Coastal also became the first team in school history to win at least 25 games in back-to-back seasons and now owns the conference record for the most wins in consecutive seasons with 56.
Coastal Carolina was also 16-2 inside the Big South Conference and set a league record for the most wins in a single season. The Chanticleers were a perfect 9-0 on the road in conference this season and became just the second team in league history to accomplish that feat. In addition, the Chants are also the first team in conference history to win five Big South road games by at least 20 points. Coastal won by 22 at VMI (Jan. 6), 21 at UNC Asheville (Jan. 20), 24 at High Point (Jan. 27), 23 at Radford (Jan. 29) and 20 at Presbyterian (Feb. 10).
The Chanticleers won the Big South regular season title for the second straight year and became the first Coastal team to win back-to-back conference championships since the 1990 and 1991 seasons. Coastal Carolina reached the postseason for the second straight year and faced No. 1 seed Alabama in the NIT first round earlier this month.
Gray and the Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team will host its annual postseason banquet Monday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Adkins Field House.
The banquet will feature dinner followed by a celebratory program that will highlight the 2010-11 season. Tickets are $20 and the event is open to the public.
