Men's Basketball to Face UAB in First Round of the NIT

The Chants and Blazers will meet Tuesday, March 16 at 8 p.m. Eastern.

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team will face UAB in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Tuesday, March 16 at 8 p.m. EDT (7 p.m. CDT), it was announced tonight on the NIT Selection Show on ESPNU.

 

The Chanticleers earned the NIT berth after winning the Big South regular-season title.  Coastal Carolina heads into Birmingham with a 28-6 overall record.  Redshirt-senior Joseph Harris and redshirt-junior Chad Gray were selected to the All-Big South First Team while Gray joined redshirt-senior Logan Johnson on the All-Big South Tournament team.  This also will be Head Coach Cliff Ellis’ 20th postseason tournament appearance with his fourth different team.

 

UAB is 23-8 on the year and finished third in Conference USA with an 11-5 conference record.  The Blazers fell in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament 58-44 to Southern Miss.  UAB has wins over Georgia, Cincinnati, Arkansas and Butler during the year.  Guard Elijah Millsap was named to the C-USA First Team.  He is averaging 15.7 points and 9.4 rebounds a contest.

 

Coastal Carolina is making its first postseason appearance since 1993 and its third overall as a Division I member.

 

Coastal is in the Mississippi State bracket that featured the Bulldogs along with Jackson State, North Carolina, William and Mary, USF and N.C. State.  The winner of the Coastal-UAB game will face the USF-N.C. State winner on either March 18, 19, 20 or 22.
