Men's Basketball's Harris Named to the All-Big South First Team; Johnson Named to the All-Academic Team
CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball redshirt junior Joseph Harris (Lejeune, N.C./Lejeune) was named to the All-Big South Conference First Team, while classmate Logan Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn./South Doyle) was named to the conference’s All-Academic Team, it was announced today (March 2) by the conference office.
Harris becomes the 28th Chanticleers to be selected to the All-Big South Team. This also is the sixth straight season a Chant has made the All-Conference Team. Harris has played in all 30 games for the Chanticleers, averaging 15.5 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He leads the Big South in both rebounding average and field-goal percentage (.573) and is in the top-10 in scoring (8th), steals (1.50/g, 10th) and blocked shots (1.20/g, 7th). Harris has had 19 double-double’s this season and 30 in his career. He also enters the Big South Tournament with a streak of 11 straight double-double performances. Harris has been the Big South Player of the Week twice this season, including after a 33-point, 22-rebound game in a 100-97 win over VMI Feb. 14. Harris has had 23 double-figure scoring outputs and 22 double-digit rebound performances in 2008-09. He scored 32 points at UNC Asheville Feb. 21 and had 30 points at VMI Jan. 10. Harris currently is second on Coastal Carolina’s all-time rebounding list (803) and second in blocked shots (110).
Johnson, who carries a 3.576 grade-point-average in business management, is averaging 6.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 30 games for the Chanticleers. He had a season-high 14 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals at Radford Feb. 9. He had 13 points against Charleston Southern Jan. 31, while he grabbed a career-high nine rebounds against VMI Feb. 14. He dished out eight assists at Liberty Jan. 12 and against VMI Feb. 14. He is shooting 70.5 percent from the free-throw line and has a 1.46 assist-to-turnover ratio.
In other specialty awards, Radford’s Artsiom Parakhouski was named the Big South Player of the Year. Liberty’s Seth Curry was selected as the Freshman of the Year. Winthrop’s Mantoris Robinson was the Defensive Player of the Year, while Radford’s Brad Greenberg was the Big South Coach of the Year. Gardner-Webb’s Aaron Linn was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Coastal Carolina is the seventh-seed in the Big South Tournament and will open play Tuesday, March 3 at second-seeded VMI. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
