Chants Heading to Appalachian State for Regular Season Finale

March 1, 2018

Conway - Coastal Carolina’s men’s basketball team will end its regular season at Appalachian State Saturday, March 3 at 3:30 p.m.

Both teams enter the game with an 8-9 Sun Belt Conference record and both teams still have an outside shot at the fourth seed at next week’s Sun Belt Conference Championship in New Orleans, which will bring a first-round bye.

CCU (14-16 overall) enters the game riding a three-game winning streak, with two of those coming on the road. One more win will equal the Chanticleers season-long winning streak of four games.

The Chants have own seven of its past 10 games and the defense has allowed 68.1 points per game during that span, while the offense has averaged 70.

The closeness of the past 10 games mirrors the season for CCU as the Chanticleers have played 17 games where the final score has been decided by seven points or less. CCU is 7-10 in those games.

Zac Cuthbertson’s 14.7 points per game scoring average continues to lead CCU, while Jaylen Shaw is not that far behind averaging 14.5. Shaw’s 166 assists are third in the conference and he is tied for third in the conference with 51 steals.

Shaw enters the final regular season game with 443 assists, good enough for fifth all-time at CCU and 21st in the Sun Belt Record book.

Artur Labinowicz has picked up his scoring over the past few games and has his average up to 11.3 points per game and is averaging 4.6 rebounds.

Mr. consistent Demario Beck continues to do his thing. The senior is averaging 10.1 points and a team-leading 7.2 rebounds per game. He is shooting 56 percent from the field. He also has two game-winning field goals this season and since he has moved into the starting lineup late in the season, CCU is 3-1.

One can’t overlook the efforts Amidou Bamba has brought to the team, especially over the past eight games where he has averaged 10 points and over four rebounds coming off the bench. He leads the team in shooting knocking down 65 percent of his field goals.

Appalachian State (13-17) has guard Ronshad Shabazz leading its offense scoring 19.2 points per game. He is third in the conference in scoring. He is the team’s leader in assists with 90.

Justin Forrest is the other double-digit scorer averaging 13.5 per game. He also leads the team in steals with 41.

Isaac Johnson is one of the leading rebounders in the conference averaging 8.4 boards per game.

The Mountaineers may only have two double-digit scorers, but they are the third highest scoring team in the conference averaging over 76 points per game.

The game will be shown live on ESPN3, while other options for following the Chants can be found at
