Men's Basketball Falls to Winthrop 70-50 in Regular-Season Finale

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team (11-19, 5-13 Big South) fell to Winthrop (11-18, 9-9 Big South) 70-50 in its regular-season finale in Rock Hill, S.C. Coastal Carolina trailed by only one at halftime, but shot just 24.1 percent in the second 20 minutes.   Coastal Carolina built a 13-point lead in the first 10 minutes of action. The Chanticleers scored the first five points of the game and took a 7-2 lead at 16:02 on a layup from redshirt junior Joseph Harris (Lejeune, N.C./Lejeune). Winthrop would cut the lead to 7-6, but the Chanticleers would then go on a 12-0 run. A jumper from junior Mario Edwards (Massillon, Ohio/Chipola J.C.) at 12:49 made it 11-6. Redshirt freshman Jon Pack’s (Dallas, Ga./East Paulding) layup at 11:41 gave the Chants a seven-point lead. Senior Steven Sexton (Monticello, Ky./Wayne County) and freshman Dexter Moore (Bluefield, W. Va./Hargrave Military) hit back-to-back three’s, forcing a Winthrop timeout and giving the Chants a 19-6 lead with 10:12 left. Winthrop would make an 11-1 run, capped by a Charles Corbin layup at 6:53, but Harris answered with a jumper at 6:15 for a 22-17 Chant lead. Coastal Carolina led 25-21 with 1:34 left on a free throw from Moore, but the Eagles would end the half on a 7-2 run, as Raymond Davis’ three with 28 seconds left gave Winthrop a 28-27 halftime lead.    Harris led Coastal Carolina with eight points and seven rebounds, while Edwards had three assists. For Winthrop, George Valentine had eight points and eight rebounds. Coastal Carolina shot 44.4 percent from the field and was 2-of-7 from three-point range, while Winthrop was 13-of-34 from the field for 38.2 percent.   Winthrop opened the half on a 5-0 run and took a 37-30 lead on two Mantoris Robinson free throws at 16:22. Winthrop made the lead double digits (43-33) at 12:44 on a Chris Malcolm jumper, and then scored the next seven points, capped by two Andre Jones free throws at 8:31. The Chants were never able to cut into the Winthrop lead, as the Eagles went 10-of-24 from the floor and 20-of-24 from the free-throw line in the second half.    Harris had his 11th straight double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Edwards added 11 points for the Chants. For Winthrop, Robinson had a game-high 15 points while Cameron Stanley added 10.   Coastal Carolina shot 33.3 percent from the floor and was just 3-of-17 from three-point range. Winthrop shot 39.7 from the field and 76.9 percent from the free-throw line. Winthrop’s bench scored 33 points and the Eagles scored 17 points off Chant turnovers.   Coastal Carolina will find out who it plays in the Big South Quarterfinals tonight. If Charleston Southern defeats Gardner-Webb, the Chants will head to Radford as the eighth seed. If Gardner-Webb wins, the Chants will travel to VMI as the seventh seed. Full brackets will be released by the Big South tonight.
