CONWAY, S.C.. -- Coastal Carolina fell in a key Big South matchup against Elon, 75-53, Feb. 26. With the loss, CCU goes to 13-13 overall and 5-8 in the Big South, while Elon goes to 11-14 and 7-6 in Big South play. With the loss, Coastal also guarantees itself a road game in the first round of the upcoming Big South Conference Tournament, while Elon remains alive for a home first round game. The seven Big South wins are the most for Elon since joining the conference in 1999-2000.
Elon took control of the early game, building a 17-4 lead with 13:46 left in the half. Coastal battled back late, going on a 13-2 over the last 4:22 to cut the halftime lead to 34-30. The Phoenix dominated the boards in the first half, outrebounding CCU, 17-9, while also hitting on 65.2 percent of their shots from the field.
Elon came out strong in the second half, outscoring Coastal 18-0 over the first 6:17 to take a 52-30 lead it would never relinquish. The Chants finally got on the board in the final half with 12:15 to play on a pair of senior Torrey Butler free throws to cut it to 52-32, but Elon would not let Coastal Carolina get closer than 20 throughout the remainder of the half. Coastal shot a paltry 25.8 percent from the floor in the second half and scored just 23 points.
Elon dominated the game, hitting 60.0 perfcent from the field and dominating the Chants on the boards, 41-21. Butler finished the game with 20 for Coastal in his final Kimbel Arena career appearance, while Kelvin Coggins added 10 as the only other CCU player in double figures. Elon was led by by Jackson Atoyebi with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Scottie Rice had 16 points. Rasmi Gamble and Steven Harvin chipped in 15 and 10, respectively.
Coastal is next in action, Sat., Mar. 1, traveling to Charleston, S.C. for the final regular season and Big South Conference game of the year at Charleston Southern. The game will be the first half of a Coastal Carolina-Charleston Southern doubleheader with the women, with tip-off against the Buccaneers set for 4 p.m. Elon wraps up regular season play at High Point, Sat., Mar. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
