Men's Basketball Heads to Texas
Conway - After three consecutive wins the men’s basketball team at Coastal Carolina will put its winning streak on the line when they travel to Texas to face Texas State and Texas Arlington.
Texas State will be CCU’s opening opponent in Texas as the game is set for Thursday Feb. 1 at 8:30 p.m. (ET). The Bobcats are one of the top teams in the conference entering the game with a 14-9 overall record and third in Sun Belt play at 7-3.
Texas State relies on its conference-leading scoring defense as they only give up 62.9 points per game. They don’t score a lot as they are averaging 67 points per game.
In the earlier meeting between the two teams in Conway, Texas State held CCU to 33 percent shooting and the Chants only hit one of its 17 three point field goals as the Bobcats came away with the 52-48 win. The 48 points is a season-low for CCU.
The Chants second game of the road trip will be against the surprising Texas Arlington Mavericks. The surprise is the fact UTA was picked to win the conference, but enter this week’s games with a surprising 4-6 conference record (13-10 overall) and tied with CCU at sixth in the conference.
These two teams met back in December to open Sun Belt Conference action with the Chants playing one of its best games of the season in the 90-65 victory.
It was CCU’s shooting performance that stood up against the Mavericks as CCU shot 50 percent from the field, 42 percent on its threes and 81 percent at the free throw line.
Jaylen Shaw led five players in double digits with a career-high 26 points.
CCU and UTA will tip off Saturday Feb. 3 at 5:15 (ET). The game can be seen live on ESPN3.
Zac Cuthbertson (15.5) and Jaylen Shaw (15.0) continue to lead CCU in scoring. Artur Labinowicz is averaging 10.7 points per game and Demario Beck is coming off the bench to add 10.6 points per game and a team-leading 7.3 rebounds per outing and 20 blocked shots.
Shaw’s 129 assists are the second highest total in the conference and he also leads the team with 39 steals.
With the recent winning streak, the Chants have moved to 10-13 overall and its 4-6 conference record has moved CCU up several spots in the conference season. The games start the second go-around for conference games as the season is quickly working towards the Sun Belt Conference Tournament which will be held in New Orleans March 7-11.
