ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's basketball senior Jack Leasure surpassed the 1,700 career-high point mark and led Coastal with 18 points, but it was not enough as rival Winthrop defeated the Chanticleers 65-43 Saturday night (Jan. 26) at Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C.
Winthrop got on the scoreboard first, but Coastal quickly answered back with a Leasure three-pointer, which pushed him past the 1,700 point mark and made him second on Coastal's all-time scoring chart. It was an exchange for the lead between the two teams as another Leasure three-pointer allowed Coastal to take a 12-10 lead with 11:54 left in the first half. The Eagles then scored 11 unanswered points, making it 21-12 with 7:54 remaining. Winthrop closed the half on a 23-3 run to lead 33-20 at the intermission.
The Chants appeared to come out strong in the second half after a triple set of three-pointers by Leasure and a lay-up by freshman forward Anthony Breeze to make the score 43-34 in favor of Winthrop. The nine point lead was the closest Coastal got to the Eagles as Winthrop took a 20 point lead with 7:39 left in the half. CCU was only able to pull within 13 points as 3:45 remained in the game, but Winthrop continued its stride as it went on to win.
Winthrop outshot Coastal 43.9 percent (25-for-57) from the field as the Chants were only able to hit 36.4 percent (16-44) of their shots. However, CCU was 60 percent from the foul line going 3-for-5, while WU was just 8-for-19.
All of Leasure's 18 points were three-pointers and was the only Chanticleer who reached double digits in scoring. He also had a team best seven rebounds, while redshirt sophomore Logan Johnson had six.
Winthrop's Michael Jenkins and Charles Corbin both lead the Eagles with 15 points and seven rebounds each. Byron Faison was the only other Eagle in double digits with 10 points.
CCU returns home to Kimbel Arena Monday, January 28 to host UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
