CONWAY, S.C. – Behind 15 points and 15 rebounds from sophomore Anthony Breeze (Greenville, S.C./Greenville), the Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team (8-11, 2-5 Big South) defeated UNC Asheville (8-11, 4-4 Big South) Jan. 19 in a Big South Conference matchup in Conway, S.C. With the win, Coastal Carolina snapped a four-game losing streak as it started a four-game homestand.   Coastal Carolina had as much as a 13-point lead on two free throws from senior Mario Sisinni (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) at 12:21, but the Bulldogs went on a 18-5 run over the next 5:27 as two free throws from Reid Augst tied the game at 49 with 6:54 to go. Breeze would hit a free throw and connect on a dunk to make it 52-49 at 5:58. Redshirt junior Joseph Harris (Lejeune, N.C./Lejeune) made it a five-point lead on two free throws with 5:58. John Williams would convert on a three-point paly at 5:05 to cut the Chant lead to two, but junior Mario Edwards (Massillon, Ohio/Chipola J.C.) hit a seven-foot jumper at 3:11, making it 58-54 Coastal Carolina. Breeze would score on a layup at 2:25 for a five-point lead, but Matt Dickey hit two free throws at 1:54, cutting the lead to three. UNC Asheville had two possessions with under a minute to go, but J.P. Primm missed a jumper and Breeze took a huge charge on Dickey with 17 seconds left. Senior Steven Sexton (Monticello, Ky./Wayne County) and Harris hit two free throws apiece to ice the win for the Chants.   Coastal Carolina led for most of the first half, scoring the first seven points and leading by 14 at the break. Coastal Carolina led 9-1 on a Breeze layup at 15:26, but Asheville would tie the game at 13 on a three from Sean Smith. The Chants went on a 9-1 run in the last 5:12 of the half. Sexton hit a three at 3:23 for a 29-20 lead. Harris’ layup at 2:51 pushed the lead to 11 and a Breeze tip-in at 1:55 made it 33-20. Breeze’s layup in the final minute made it 35-21 at the break.   Harris was Coastal Carolina’s other double-figure scorer with 14 points. He added seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Redshirt junior Logan Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn./South Doyle) added three steals and four assists.    For UNC Asheville, Augst led the squad with 15 points, while Dickey and Smith had 12 and 11 points, respectively. John Williams added nine points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.   Coastal Carolina shot 39 percent from the floor, but had a 43-34 rebounding advantage. The Chants had 15 offensive rebounds, led by Breeze’s eight. The Chants also scored 30 points in the paint and had 16 points on turnovers.   UNC Asheville shot 35.7 percent from the floor and was 6-of-21 from beyond the three-point line. Primm and Dickey had three assists apiece.   Coastal Carolina continues the homestand Saturday, Jan. 24 hosting Winthrop at 2 p.m. UNC Asheville hosts Presbyterian the same day at 7 p.m.
