Men's Basketball Falls to Gardner-Webb 77-55

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team (7-11, 1-5 Big South) fell to Gardner-Webb (8-9, 4-3 Big South) 77-55 Jan. 17 in Boiling Springs, N.C., in a Big South Conference contest.    Gardner-Webb held a 44-32 rebounding advantage, led by Joshua Henley’s 18 rebounds. Henley had nine offensive rebounds, while the Bulldogs had 20 offensive boards on the game. Redshirt junior Joseph Harris (Lejeune, N.C./Lejeune) had 11 rebounds to lead Coastal Carolina.   The Bulldogs got off to a hot start, taking a 14-6 lead on a Jonathan Moore three at 14:20. Gardner-Webb extended it to 19-8 at 12:45 on one of Grayson Flittner’s six three-pointers. Gardner-Webb led by as much as 21 points in the first half, but the Chants cut the lead to 12 at the break as a three-point play from Harris were the last points of the half at 2:06.   Gardner-Webb again started quickly in the second half, upping the lead to 19 (44-25) on a Flittner layup at 17:04. The Bulldogs would lead by as much as the 30 in the last four minutes of the game in winning their first Big South game at home.   Harris and redshirt junior Logan Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn./South Doyle) had nine points apiece to lead the Chanticleers. Senior Mario Sisinni (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips), junior Mario Edwards (Massillon, Ohio/Chipola J.C.) and sophomore Anthony Breeze (Greenville, S.C./Greenville) had seven points apiece.   For Gardner-Webb, Flittner had 22 points, while C.J. Hailey had 16 coming off the bench.   Sisinni had a team-high five assists for the Chants, while Harris had four steals. Coastal Carolina shot 39.2 percent from the floor and committed 19 turnovers.    Gardner-Webb was 11-of-27 from three-point range and had 18 assists, led by Aaron Linn’s six. The Bulldogs also scored 27 points off of turnovers.   Coastal Carolina returns to Kimbel Arena to start a four-game homestand Monday, Jan. 19 against UNC Asheville. Game time is at 7 p.m.
