CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - High Point senior guard Eugene Harris (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Basketball Player of the Week, while Charleston Southern guard Jeremy Sexton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Coastal Carolina guard Kierre Greenwood (Cincinnati, Ohio) have been named The Crons Brand Co-Freshman of the Week for games played Jan. 4-10, it was announced today by the Conference office.
Harris led HPU with 15 points in the Panthers' win over UNC Asheville on Monday, then scored a season-high 20 points in High Point's 83-77 win over preseason favorite Radford on Saturday. He hit key shots in both games and was 11-of-20 from the field ( =55.0), including 7-of-13 from three-point range ( =53.8). Against UNC Asheville, he made five three-pointers, including three in the second half, to lead the Panthers. Against Radford, Harris was 6-of-8 from the field and 6-of-6 from the foul line. He also hit a momentum-changing three-pointer at the buzzer before halftime that put HPU in the lead for good. Harris went 4-of-4 from the foul line down the stretch and hit two with seven seconds remaining to seal the win.
Sexton averaged 18.3 points, 59.4 percent from the floor (19-of-32) and 63.2 percent from beyond the arc (12-of-19) in three games. In Charleston Southern's first win over Winthrop in eight years, Sexton tallied 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. He had a stretch of 11 straight points for CSU in the first half, while scoring 14 points in the first 20 minutes. After scoring 18 points in a losing effort at Gardner-Webb, Sexton scored 15 of his 18 points at UNC Asheville in the second half and overtime period. After scoring 10 points in the final 10 minutes of regulation, Sexton hit a three with 31 seconds remaining in overtime to put the Bucs ahead for good.
Greenwood averaged 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals in three Chanticleer wins last week. He was 13-of-23 from the floor ( =56.5 percent) and 14-of-17 from the line ( =82.4). Greenwood scored 13 points, including two big three-pointers in the second half, and tallied four assists and four steals in Coastal's win over Presbyterian on Monday. He followed that performance with 12 points and eight rebounds at UNC Asheville, and blocked the Bulldogs' final field goal attempt at the buzzer to preserve a one-point win. Greenwood also hit four free throws in the second half, including two with 1:06 remaining. He wrapped up the week with 17 points, three assists and three steals at Gardner-Webb on Saturday, as he was 5-of-6 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the line.
