Men's Basketball's Harris Named Big South Co-Player of the Week

– Coastal Carolina junior forward Joseph Harris (Lejeune, N.C.) and VMI senior guard Chavis Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) have been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week, while High Point’s Steadman Short (Simpsonville, S.C.) has been named the New Balance Freshman of the Week for games played Dec. 22-Jan. 4, it was announced today by the Conference office.   Harris averaged 13.7 points and 11.7 rebounds in three wins, helping the Chanticleers improve to 7-7 on the season. He posted a double-double in each game and became the 28th player in Big South history to pull down 600 career rebounds. Harris started the week by scoring 11 points and adding 12 rebounds and four assists in a 63-55 win over East Carolina, then added 13 points and 11 boards in a victory over Emmanuel College. He concluded the week with 17 points and 12 rebounds in a Big South win over High Point. Harris, who also had two steals in each game, was 17-of-27 from the floor ( =.630) and averaged 4.7 offensive rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.3 blocked shots.   Holmes averaged 25.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in two wins for the Keydets. He scored 23 points and was 6-of-12 from the field in VMI’s 73-70 come-from-behind win over Richmond. He scored 20 second-half points, including VMI’s final 15 points of the game. He added 27 points in a Big South win at Gardner-Webb, hitting 9-of-16 from the floor. He scored four crucial points, including two free throws in the final 2:26 to help the Keydets to a four-point win. For the week, Holmes was 15-of-28 from the field ( =.536) and 6-of-13 from long range ( =.462).   Short averaged 15.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in two games, posting back-to-back career-best scoring performances. He reached double figures for the first time in his career with 13 points at No. 23 Minnesota, and also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds against the Gophers. At Coastal Carolina, he tallied his first career double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds against the Chanticleers. Short, who entered the week averaging 4.2 points and 4.0 rebounds through nine games, was 8-of-18 from the field ( =.444), 14-of-22 from the line ( =.636) and recorded 12 of his 20 boards on the offensive glass.   Other Player of the Week Nominees: Jamarco Warren (Charleston Southern), Anthony Smith (Liberty) and Artsiom Parakhouski (Radford).   Other Freshmen of the Week Nominees: Kelvin Martin (Charleston Southern), Seth Curry (Liberty), Chase Holmes (Presbyterian) and Keith Gabriel (VMI).
