CONWAY - Coastal Carolina travels to Farmville, Va., Saturday afternoon to take on the Lancers of Longwood University. This game marks the first Big South Conference game for both teams this season. This is also Longwood's first season in the Big South.

Longwood has a record of 3-11 this season, including road losses at No. 12 Creighton, No. 21 Georgetown, VCU, Seton Hall, Arkansas and Marshall. The Lancers are under the direction of 10th-year head coach Mike Gillian. LU is led by junior captain Tristan Carey, who has averaged 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists, and freshman Michael Kessens, who has averaged 11.4 points and 9.9 rebounds. The Lancers three wins came against Florida A&M in Las Vegas and a pair of non-Division I home victories against Central Penn and Southern Virginia.

Coastal Carolina and Longwood have met just once on the hardwood. The Chants fell 89-72 Nov. 30, 1984, at Longwood as part of the Longwood Invitational. The Lancers are making their Big South Conference debut against the Chants Saturday afternoon.

The Chanticleers have an all-time record of 21-6 in conference openers including an 8-2 record over the last 10 seasons. Coastal is 15-12 in conference road openers including 7-3 over the last 10 seasons.

The Chanticleers are 18-14 in their first game after New Year's Day dating back to the 1980-81 season. The Chants have won seven of their last 10 openers despite dropping last season's Jan. 2 contest at Campbell 70-65 in overtime.    

Coastal Carolina is 3-4 in games played on Jan. 5 including 1-1 on the road and 1-1 in Big South Conference openers. The Chants last meeting on Jan. 5 was in 2009 at home against Radford. The Chants fell 68-52. CCU's last win on Jan. 5 came in 2008 at home against Susquehanna, 83-72. Coastal opened Big South Conference play in 2005 on Jan. 5 at home against Winthrop and won 76-68 but fell in the BSC opener on Jan. 5, 2002 at High Point 87-71. 

Coastal Carolina senior guard Kierre Greenwood became the 22nd player in Big South history with 400 career helpers on Dec. 13 as he dished out eight assists against Toccoa Falls to give himself 403 for his career. He became the third Chanticleer to make the conference's all-time list, joining Robert Dowdell (561 from 1987-91) and Alvin Green (411 from 2000-05). He now has 421 career assists.

Coastal ranks first in the Big South in steals and has four players ranked in the top-15 in steals per game including fourth-ranked Anthony Raffa, sixth-ranked Kierre Greenwood, 10th-ranked Warren Gillis and 15th-ranked Michel Enanga.

The Chants have out-rebounded all but two opponents this season. CCU leads the Big South in rebounding margin at +6.5. Coastal has two players ranked in the top-16 in rebounding in the league, 12th-ranked Michel Enanga and 16th-ranked El Hadji Ndieguene.
