GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's basketball squad struggled to get on track and slow down host East Carolina, losing 89-64, Jan. 2. With their 27th consecutive non-conference road loss, the Chanticleers fell to 6-6 on the year while the Pirates advanced to 5-7.
The host Pirates came out gunning, knocking down the opening basket of the game on a jumper by guard Darrell Jenkins. Coastal answered immediately on a three-pointer by senior guard Jack Leasure and the game went back and forth in the early going, with four lead changes. The Chants enjoyed a 9-6 lead with just under five minutes gone in the first half but East Carolina kept coming and took control of the game. The Pirates built a lead throughout the remainder of the half on 63.0 percent (17-of-27), while Coastal just hit on 45.8 percent (11-of-24) of its shots and were outrebounded 16-9. On that strength, ECU entered the halftime break with their largest lead of the half at 48-34. East Carolina continued to pour it on to start the second half, going on a 11-3 run in the first five minutes of the second half to push the lead to 59-37 and never look back. The Pirates held their largest lead of the night at 80-52 with just over seven mintues to play before settling for the 25-point win. East Carolina slowed down to kknock down just 47.6 percent (30-of-63) for the game, while Coastal dipped to 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the field. ECU also connected on 50.0 percent (13-of-26) from the three-point line. The Pirates dominated the glass, 43-26, leading to 20 second-chance points and also got 53 points off the bench. Leasure led Coastal with 16 points, including four three-pointers, while senior guard Everage Richardson chipped in 13 and junior guard Mario Sisinni added 10. Sam Hinnant led all scorers with 23 poitns, while James Legan had 19 off the bench. The Chanticleers will return home for their final non-conference game of the 2007-08 season, hosting Susquehanna, Saturday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. in Kimbel Arena.
