CONWAY - After leading Division III Greensboro College 38-33 at the half, the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina pulled away in the second half taking an 85-65 victory at home. The Pride of Greensboro hit 11 3-pointers against CCU including seven in the first half to keep the game close. The Chants were led by seniors Anthony Raffa and Kierre Greenwood. Raffa had 20 points including 14 in the second half and a team-high four steals while Greenwood had a career-high 21 points and dished out a season-high eight assists.
The Chants shot for a season-best 54.4 percent from the field and held the Pride to just 36.8 percent shooting including 25.8 percent in the second half. CCU dominated the paint, outscoring the Pride 60-12. Greensboro turned over the ball 20 times and Coastal took a 25-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
CCU sophomore Warren Gillis added 13 points including going 3-of-4 from long range while freshman Michel Enanga chipped in 12 points and five assists. Enanga, freshman Uros Ljeskovic, junior El Hadji Ndieguene and freshman Badou Diagne all tied for the team lead in rebounds with six.
The Chants struggled to put the Pride away early as Greensboro shot 50.0 percent from the field in the first half including 35.0 percent from 3-point range. CCU's largest lead early was 12-7 but back-to-back 3-pointers by the Pride gave Greensboro a one-point lead at the 15:08 mark. Neither team led by more than five points for the opening 19 minutes of the game. Trailing 29-28 with 4:23 left in the first half, the Chanticleers went on a 10-2 run powered by a pair of Gillis 3-pointers to take a 38-31 lead with just a minute left in the first half. A layup as time expired by the Pride cut the halftime lead to just five.
The second half began much like the first half with both teams exchanging baskets. With 11:06 left in the game the Chants began a 16-2 run over a seven-minute stretch to take a 21-point lead. Raffa contributed eight of the Chants' 16 points over the run. The Chants coasted the rest of the way to a 85-65 victory.
The win marks the final game of the 2012 portion of Coastal's season and the Chants will return to action in 2013 on Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. on the road at Longwood University. It will be CCU's first Big South Conference game of the season and first meeting with Longwood since 1984.
