Men's Hoops Earns 73-58 Road Victory at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Joseph Harris and Mario Edwards both had double-doubles and that duo joined Chad Gray with 16 points apiece to lead the Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team (7-2, 2-0 Big South) to a 73-58 win over Liberty (4-6, 1-1 Big South) Dec. 5 in Lynchburg, Va. Coastal moves to 2-0 in the Big South for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

The Chanticleers shot a sizzling 51.9 percent from the field, led by Harris’ 8-of-11 from the floor. Gray also was 7-of-10 from the field while Edwards was 6-of-8. Liberty went up 6-5 on a free throw from Patrick Konan at 16:13 of the first half, but after a three-pointer from Edwards at 15:54, the Chants would lead for the rest of the game.

Coastal took a 14-8 lead on a layup from Edwards at 12:58. Liberty would cut the lead to 22-19 at 9:10 on a tip-in from Kyle Ohman, but the Chants went on a 9-0 run that was capped by a Harris layup at 5:13, giving the Chants a 31-19 lead. Coastal led by as much as 14 in the first half on four straight from Logan Johnson, as the Chants went into the lockerroom up 37-25.

Gray had 10 first-half points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. Harris added nine rebounds. For Liberty, Ohman had 13 first-half points. Liberty shot just 36.7 percent from the field and 1-of-8 from three-point range.

Coastal started the second half on a 9-0 run and led by as much as 24 points on two separate occasions. The Chants held Liberty without a field goal for the first 10:14 of the second half. Liberty would get as close as 12 points (69-47) with 12 seconds left, but Coastal would win at Liberty for the first time since 2007.

Harris had his 37th career double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Edwards had 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. The Chants had 22 assists on the night as Johnson, Edwards and Kierre Greenwood had four assists apiece.

Kyle Ohman had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead Liberty, while Jesse Sanders had 12 points and four assists. Coastal Carolina outrebounded Liberty 37-32 and had 34 points in the paint.

Coastal Carolina will take a week off for final exams before returning to the court Saturday, Dec. 12 against Bridgewater College. Tip off is at 2 p.m., in Kimbel Arena.
