CONWAY - Coastal Carolina opened the game shooting 8-of-8 from the field in the first eight minutes as the Chanticleers defeated Spalding University 87-43, Friday night in Kimbel Arena.
With the win, Coastal (4-0) is off to its best start since starting the 1981-82 season when they won eight consecutive games to start the year. The Chants ended the 81-82 campaign with a 21-9 overall record.
The Chanticleers opened the first half shooting 76 percent from the field (19-of-25) while holding the Golden Eagles to only 7-of-26 (26.9%). Coastal finished the game 32-of-47 from the field (32-of-47) while Spalding shot 25 percent (12-48).
Chris Gradnigo led all scorers with 17, going a perfect 7-of-7 while grabbing seven boards while Anthony Raffa added 13 points, three assists and three steals. Raffa has now scored in double-figures during his last 13 games, dating back to last season.
Sam McLaurin totaled 12 points and a game-high nine boards on 6-of-10 shooting. Kierre Greenwood was also perfect from the field making 4-of-4 inside the arc while recording four assists, one block and a steal.
Spalding never led in the game as Coastal's 44 point final margin was their largest lead of the night.
Jemetrius Brasher was the only Golden Eagle in double-figures, scoring 11 points and grabbing five rebounds and recording three blocks.
Freshmen Warren Gillis added nine points on 4-of-5 shooting for the Chanticleers and Jon Pack had eight points and six boards in only 13 minutes of action.
The two teams combined for 38 turnovers with Spalding recording 20 and the Chants with 18. Coastal turned the 20 Golden Eagles miscues into 25 points while finishing with 50 points inside the paint.
Coastal will travel to Clemson, S.C. on Tuesday, Nov. 22 to face the Clemson Tigers at 9:00 p.m. The Clemson game will be televised on FOX Sports South.
