CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's basketball team won its second game in as many days as the Chanticleers turned in a 79-40 victory over LaGrange College Saturday evening from Kimbel Arena.
Newcomer Desmond Holloway scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds and currently leads the team with 15.5 points per game. The Indianapolis, Ind., native scored 13 points in his Coastal debut Friday night against Piedmont College.
Sophomore Kierre Greenwood added 12 points and a game-high six assists, while junior Willie Kirkland finished with 11 points and four rebounds.
LaGrange forward Nic Whitfield paced the Panthers with 10 points and six rebounds.
Coastal Carolina (2-0) held an 18-9 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game before LaGrange used a 5-0 run over the next 2:25 to cut the Chanticleer deficit to four points at 18-14 on a basket from Stephen Spivey and a three-pointer from Blake Craft with just over seven minutes left in the half.
The Chanticleers answered by holding the Panthers scoreless for the remainder of the first half and 2:17 into the second half and scored 35 unanswered points to open up a 53-14 edge before Britt Gaylor broke the scoring drought with a three-pointer at 17:43 mark of the second half.
Coastal went on to lead by as many as 44 points in the second half and had every play that saw action in the game score at least three points.
The Chanticleers shot 54.5 percent from the field and held LaGrange to just 26.3 percent on just 15 field goals. Coastal also forced the Panthers into 19 turnovers and turned those mistakes into 24 points. In addition, the Chants' defensive pressure resulted in a 25-0 edge in fast break points.
Coastal returns to action Tuesday nigh tat 7 p.m. when the Chants travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on College of Charleton from Carolina First Arena.
