CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team (1-0) earned an impressive 70-59 win over preseason Southern Conference favorite College of Charleston (0-1) Nov. 13 in Conway, S.C. The Chants snapped a 10-game and 17-year losing streak to the Cougars with the win.
The College of Charleston, who was selected to win the SoCon South Division by the League's media, started the game strong, taking an 18-9 lead with the 12:49 mark on a three-pointer from Andrew Goudelock. A Casaan Breeden jumper at 11:37 made it 20-13 Cougars. Coastal Carolina then cut the lead to 21-17 at 8:46 with a jumper from redshirt-junior Chad Gray (Kingstree, S.C./South Carolina). The Cougars extended their lead to 27-20 on a Tony White, Jr., layup at 4:33, but the Chants would end the half on an 8-2 run, capped by a huge three-pointer, the only one of the game by the Chants, from redshirt-senior Logan Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn./South Doyle).
Redshirt-senior Joseph Harris (Lejeune, N.C./Lejeune) had nine points and nine rebounds for the Chants. Redshirt-sophomore Sam McLaurin (Havana, Fla./East Gadsden) added five rebounds. For the College of Charleston, Goudelock had eight points, including two three-pointers. The Chants were 11-of-32 from the field (34.4 percent) and outrebounded the Cougars 28-12 in the first half.
The Chants took their first lead of the game with 18:39 left in the game on a layup from Harris. The College of Charleston took its last lead of the game at the 18-minute mark on a Breeden layup. Coastal immediately went on a 7-0 run that ended with two free throws form Johnson at 16:11. The College of Charleston made it 42-41 at 12:50 on a Donavan Monroe jumper, but the 12-0 the Chanticleers went on over the next 5:12 gave Coastal their biggest lead of the night at 54-41. The run was capped by a layup from freshman Danny Nieman (Concord, N.C./Hargrave Military). The Cougars would make a push, cutting the Chanticleer lead to 54-49 on a free throw from Willis Hall, but Nieman's layup at 2:41 pushed the Coastal lead back to double digits. The Cougars again answered, making it 64-59 with 42 seconds left on a three by Goudelock, but dunks from Gray and Harris sealed the season-opening win for Coastal.
Harris recorded his 31st career-double-double with 21 points and 17 rebounds. He also added four steals and had a blocked shot, which brings him within two of the Coastal Carolina career blocked shot record. Gray added 17 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Dexter Moore (Bluefield, W. Va./Hargrave Military) was the third Chant in double figures in scoring with 10 points. Nieman had seven points and three steals in his debut, while McLaurin added seven rebounds.
For the College of Charleston, Goudelock had a team-high 19 points, while three Cougars had 10, including Hall, who made it a double-double with 11 rebounds. Monroe had four steals and four assists for the College of Charleston.
Coastal Carolina had 17 second-chance points and outrebounded the Cougars 49-30. Both teams shot just over 41 percent from the field, while Coastal had 42 points in the paint and 20 fast-break points.
The Chanticleers will open the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off Monday, Nov. 16 against #9/8 Duke. Tipoff is at 7 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
