Men's Basketball Routs Covenant in Season Opener

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina scored the opening bucket of the 2011-12 season and never looked back as they defeated Covenant College, 96-54 Friday, Nov. 11, in Kimbel Arena.

Coastal opened with a 9-2 run to open the game and built an eighteen point lead on a jumper by Jon Pack with 10:42 remaining in the first half to go up 30-12. Pack finished with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.

After a layup by Sam McLaurin with 7:32 on the clock, Covenant went on an 11-6 run over the next 4:09, spurred by a three-pointer by Rosbie Mutherson to cut the Chanticleer lead to 12 with 3:23 remaining in the half.

A layup by Jon Pack and a three-pointer by Dexter Moore gave the Chanticleers a 48-31 halftime lead.

Coastal opened the second half with a pair of turnovers and Covenant converted a pair of layups to cut the Chants lead to 13 with 17:47 remaining in the game. That was as close as the Scots would get as Coastal went on a 25-5 run over the next 10:19 to extend its lead to 33 with 7:11 remaining in the game.

The Chanticleer defense held the Scots without a field goal for 8:38 in the second half while Coastal finished the game with a 44-15 run, holding Covenant to 23 second half points.

Coastal went 39-of-72 from the field, shooting 54.2 percent while Covenant shot 40 percent (20-50).

Anthony Raffa led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting going 2-for-4 from beyond the arc while McLaurin and Chris Gradnigo added 11 and 10 respectfully.

Zarome Lakey was the lone Scot in double-figures, adding 12 points and two boards.

The Chanticleers continue their season opening four-game home stand as they welcome Methodist College Saturday night with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m.
