CCU Falls at App State; Will Face Texas State in Sun Belt Championship Opening Round
Boone, N.C. - Coastal Carolina fell in the final game of the regular season 76-67 at Appalachian State. With the loss, the Chanticleers will face Texas State in the opening round of the Sun Belt Tournament Championship.
It was a game which neither team shot the ball very well, but CCU could only manage 38 percent from the field.
The Chanticleers (14-17, 8-10 Sun Belt) continued to go inside in the game and only attempted 15 three point field goals, hitting six for 40 percent. CCU did a good job at the free throw line hitting 19 of 22 for 86.4 percent.
Appalachian State (14-17, 9-9 Sun Belt) was able to get to the free throw line 26 times in the second half, hitting 21. The Mountaineers shot 40 percent from the field and only hit seven of its 30 three point field goals for 23 percent.
Craig Hinton had a game-high 20 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Griffin Kinney added 18 points while Tyrell Johnson scored 10.
CCU did a good job on the Mountaineers' leading scorer Ronshad Shabazz, who came into the game averaging over 19 points per game. He finished the game with 11 points, only hitting three-of-10 from the field.
CCU out rebounded Appalachian State 38-36 with Demario Beck grabbing a game-high 11. Cuthbertson was one rebound away from a double-double finishing with nine.
The Mountaineers carried a 38-33 lead into half as Hinton had 13 points. Kinney scored nine and Johnson had eight.
Appalachian State shot 42 percent from the field, and hit six three point field goals.
CCU shot 44 percent and out rebounded App 21-16, but eight turnovers hurt the Chanticleers. Sanders came off the bench to lead the team in scoring with seven while Beck and Cuthbertson had six each.
Next up for the Chanticleers will be the Sun Belt Conference Championship where they will open the championship against the tournament's ninth seed Texas State. CCU will go into the tournament as the eighth seed. The teams played twice this season with each team winning on the other's home court.
