ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Keith Gabriel scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the first half as VMI knocked down 14 3-pointers to defeat Coastal Carolina 85-68 Wednesday afternoon at Kimmel Arena.
After a Sam McLaurin dunk to start the game VMI would go on a 9-0 run with Gabriel scoring seven points to lead 9-2 at the 17:10 mark. VMI extended its lead to 11 early in the first half and led 37-26 at the 4:34 mark.
Coastal pulled within six seconds before the half on a Danny Nieman 3-pointer as the Keydets took a 43-37 lead into the break.
The Chants would open the second half with a pair of baskets to pull within one point on an Anthony Raffa 3-pointer with 18:50 left in the second half. After both teams exchanged baskets VMI would go on a 10-0 run to take a 55-44 lead at the 12 minute mark and never looked back.
Despite shooting 51.0 percent from the floor Coastal committed 16 turnovers and allowed VMI to shoot 57.1 percent from the field. Entering the game Coastal had only allowed two teams to shoot 50 percent or better this year.
McLaurin led all Coastal scorers with 14 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the year. Raffa added 12 points and Kierre Greenwood scored 11 while recording eight assists.
The loss broke an eight game winning streak against the Keydets. Coastal's last loss to VMI was a 96-76 defeat during the 2008-09 season at Cameron Hall.
The Chanticleers finish the season 19-11 while VMI moves to 16-15 on the year.
