CONWAY, S.C. – Matt Dickey hit the game-winning three-pointer as time expired and UNC Asheville escaped with a 61-58 win over Coastal Carolina Tuesday night from Kimbel Arena.
Danny Nieman’s foul shot with 1:36 left tied the game at 58. Sam McLaurin followed with a blocked shot on a jumper by Jaron Lane and Chad Gray grabbed the rebound with 53 seconds on the clock.
Coastal Carolina (25-4, 15-2) turned the ball over on its next possession, but Dickey missed a three-pointer on the other end and Coastal called timeout with 2.8 seconds to play.
The Chanticleers setup for one final play, but the inbounds pass was tipped by Lane and Dickey intercepted the ball near half court and took three dribbles before sinking the trey as the horn sounded.
UNC Asheville (14-13, 9-7) trailed 45-41 with 10:15 left, but used a 9-0 run thereafter to take a 50-45 lead following a pair of free throws from Lane.
The Bulldogs pushed their lead to six points at 54-48 on a layup by Lane, but Coastal used a layup from McLaurin and a three-pointer by Anthony Raffa on its next two possessions to pull within a point at 54-53 with just over five minutes to play.
Gray gave Coastal its final lead of the game when his jump shot put the Chanticleers up 57-56 with 2:25 remaining.
The Bulldogs took their biggest lead of the game 1:37 into the second half when Dickey put UNC Asheville up 37-29 with a layup. Coastal Carolina answered with a 16-4 run midway through the half to take a 45-41 lead on a jumper by Gray.
Lane finished with a game-high 16 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Dickey added 13 points and three steals. Both Primm and Chris Stephenson added 10 points apiece for the Bulldogs.
Raffa led the Chanticleers with 15 points. Gray finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while McLaurin added 13 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Crawford tallied 10 points and eight rebounds.
Coastal Carolina puts the finishing touches on the regular season Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. when the Chanticleers travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on Charleston Southern from Charleston Southern Field House.
