CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team (23-5) defeated North Carolina Central (7-21) 68-57 Feb. 15 in Durham, N.C. The Chanticleers raced out to a 22-2 lead and used four second-half three-pointers from Mario Edwards in the defeat of the Eagles.
Coastal Carolina scored the first 17 points of the game, holding the Eagles without a point for the first 8:23. Kierre Greenwood and Joseph Harris scored four points apiece to put the Chants up eight at 16:25. Greenwood hit a three at 14:23 and Edwards had a layup and a fast-break dunk for a 15-0 advantage at 13:06. Sam McLaurin hit two free throws at 11:55 for a 17-0 lead. North Carolina Central scored its first two points on a Dami Sapara layup at 11:37. Coastal took the 22-2 lead at 8:50 on a Chad Gray dunk. North Carolina Central would cut the lead to 11 points, as a Vincent Davis layup with 1:49 left made it 29-18 Chanticleers. Harris came back with a layup at 1:34, but a Nick Chasten layup at 1:07 made it 31-20 going into the break.
Harris led Coastal with 11 first-half points, while Greenwood added seven. Coastal shot 46.4 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes and outrebounded NCCU 22-9. Davis came off the bench to lead the Eagles with nine first-half points. The Eagles shot 39.1 percent from the floor in the first period.
North Carolina Central would get the Coastal lead to single digits at 19:09 on a Chasten three pointer. North Carolina Central would cut the lead to eight on five different occasions, but could get no closer. Edwards' three at 11:41 gave the Chants a 50-36 lead. He then had a backdoor layup at 11:00 to make it 52-38. At 8:11, Chasten hit a three to cut the lead to 54-43, but Edwards answered with a three to keep the lead at 14 points. Coastal led by as much as 17 points in the second half on two Logan Johnson free throws with 4:14 left. Coastal got to the final 68-57 margin on two Johnson free throws with 41 seconds remaining.
Coastal had three players score in double figures, led by Edwards' 18. Harris added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Greenwood had 13 points. McLaurin and Johnson had four assists apiece, while McLaurin added three blocked shots.
North Carolina Central was led by Chasten's 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Davis added 11 points.
Coastal Carolina shot an even 50 percent from the floor and was 6-of-15 from three-point range. The Chants also had a 41-26 rebounding advantage.
North Carolina Central shot 42.1 percent from the floor and hit five three-pointers. The Eagles also forced the Chants into 21 turnovers.
Coastal Carolina now starts a three-game homestand to end the regular season. The Chants host Charleston Southern Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m., in Kimbel Arena
