Men's Basketball Falls to Winthrop 67-64 in a Back-and-Forth Battle

The Chants and Eagles had 14 ties and 12 lead changes before Coastal could not overcome a late Eagle spurt.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Two top teams in the Big South Conference traded punches before Winthrop (11-10, 7-4 Big South) used a 10-2 run over a 2:01 late in the second half and held on to defeat the Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team (19-4, 9-2 Big South) 67-64 Jan. 30 in Rock Hill, S.C.  The Chants fell on the road in conference play for the first time this season and had a three-game winning streak snapped.


The game features 14 ties and 12 lead changes.  The game had its last tie with 6:02 left as Winthrop’s Charles Corbin made it 50-50 with a free throw.  Mantoris Robinson gave the Eagles a two-point lead with 5:46 left, but Mario Edwards was fouled and made 1-of-2 from the line, cutting the Eagle lead to 52-51.  Middleton would then score the next six points, as his old-fashion three-point play at 4:58 gave the Eagles a 58-51 advantage.  Edwards hit two free throws at 4:37, but jumpers from Middleton and Andre Jones gave Winthrop its biggest lead of the game, 62-53, at 3:45.  Coastal battled back after an Andy Buechert jumper gave the Eagles the 64-55 advantage.  Edwards and Greenwood hit two free throws apiece, cutting the lead to 64-59 at 2:25.  Greenwood then hit a jumper and was fouled at the two-minute mark.  His free throw made it 64-62 WU.  Both teams missed jumper on their next possessions.  Coastal fouled Andre Jones, who made one to make it a three-point Winthrop advantage.  Greenwood then had a look, but his three was off the mark and the Eagles corralled the rebound.  Robinson hit two free throws to seal the win.


Coastal hit five three’s in the first half, but made just four more field goals and were down 26-24 at the break.  Logan Johnson hit a three at 16:47 for an early 6-3 lead.  A Chad Gray jumper gave the Chants an 8-4 lead at 14:25, but the Eagles scored the next seven points, as a Robinson three at 11:51 gave the Eagles an 11-8 advantage.  Winthrop had two separate five-point leads in the first half, but a Johnson three and Harris layup tied the game at 21 with 6:14 left in the half.  Coastal would take a 23-21 lead on a Harris tip-in at 5:11, but Winthrop would score five of the last six points of the half to take a two-point lead into the lockerroom.


Gray led Coastal with eight first-half points, while Harris had seven rebounds.  Coastal was 5-of-14 from the three-point line, but shot just 32.1 percent from the floor.  Middleton had eight points for Winthrop as the Eagles shot 37 percent from the floor.


The game would then go back-and-forth to start the second half.  Coastal took a 30-29 lead on a Greenwood jumper at 17:13.  After a Robinson three, Harris answered with a layup to tie the game at 32.  Sam McLaurin’s jumper at 14:31 tied the game at 34.  Winthrop took a 40-37 lead at 12:53 on a Jones three, but Gray’s three-point play tied the game for a 10th time at 40.  Robinson and Coastal’s Danny Nieman exchanged three’s to tie the game at 43 with 9:40 left.  McLaurin’s jumper at 7:43 tied the game at 47.  Edwards’ jumper at 7:16 gave the Chants their final lead at 7:16 (50-49) before the frantic finish.


Gray led the Chants with 17 points off the bench.  He added seven rebounds.  Harris had his 12th double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.  Edwards was the third Chant in double figures with 13 points.  Greenwood scored seven points and had three assists, but played just 14 minutes due to foul trouble. 


For Winthrop, Middleton and Robinson had 16 and 15 points, respectively.  Buechert added eight rebounds and three blocked shots.


Coastal shot 37.3 percent from the floor and were 7-of-22 from three-point range.  Winthrop was 41.4 percent from the floor and outrebounded Coastal 40-37. 


Coastal Carolina returns to Kimbel Arena Thursday, Feb. 4 against Gardner-Webb.  Tip off is at 7 p.m.
