CLINTON, S.C. – Chad Gray and Mario Edwards had 18 points apiece and the Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team (19-3, 9-1 Big South) was 10-of-16 from three-point range as the Chanticleers defeated Presbyterian (3-19, 1-9 Big South) 64-46 Jan. 28 in Clinton, S.C. Coastal Carolina won its seventh straight road game and maintained its two-game lead in the Big South Conference.
Both teams struggled from the field in the early going. Joseph Harris hit two field goals in the first minute for an early 4-0 lead, but the Chants would not score again until Logan Johnson’s three-pointer at 14:26, making it 7-2 Chants. Gray had a dunk and a teardrop jumper, the latter giving Coastal a 15-8 lead at 8:42. Presbyterian would cut the lead to four points (21-17) on three-pointers from Walt Allen and Jake Troyli, but Edwards would answer with a three of his own from the right corner, giving the Chants a 24-17 lead. A Greenwood jumper and Gray free throw off an intentional foul built the Coastal lead to 10 points, but Chase Holmes would grab a rebound off a missed Harris free throw and go coast-to-coast for a layup at the buzzer, making it 27-19 at the break.
Harris and Greenwood led the Chants with eight first-half points apiece. Greenwood was 2-for-3 on three-point attempts, while Harris hit four field goals. Edwards had four assists, while three Chants had three rebounds apiece. Holmes led PC with six points, while Troyli had five points and five rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Coastal shot 44 percent in the first half and was 4-of-7 from three-point range.
Troyli opened the second half with a jumper to cut the Chant lead to six, but Edwards scored the Chants’ first five points of the second half and Coastal led most of the second half by double figures. Edwards, who was 6-of-8 from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point range in the second half, hit a three at 14:04 to make it 37-25 Chants. An Edwards three at 9:54 made it 45-31 Coastal. The Chanticleers stretched the lead to 20 with 7:10 left on a Gray three. Coastal led by 20 or more most of the rest of the way, moving to 6-0 on the road in Big South games.

Presbyterian was led by Holmes’ 14 points. Troyli had seven rebounds, while Travis Smith dished out four assists.
The 62.5 percent from three-point range was the best by the Chants since Feb. 25, 2006 at Radford (71.4 percent). Edwards was 4-of-5 from behind the arc, while Greenwood and Gray had two three’s apiece.
