CLINTON, S.C. - Anthony Raffa scored a team-high 19 points including the Chanticleers' last six points as Coastal Carolina held off Presbyterian College 52-49 Thursday night at the Templeton Center.
Trailing by 13 with 14:40 remaining in the game, Presbyterian mounted a furious comeback to pull within one point with 21 seconds left in the game. After a pair of Raffa's free throws, Khalid Mutakabbir missed a well-defended 3-pointer with less than six seconds on the clock to tie the game. Following a missed one-and-one attempt on the other end, Pierre Miller missed a game-tying three as time expired for Coastal's sixth straight win against the Blue Hose.
Leading by seven at the break, Coastal would build a 13-point lead following a Chris Gradnigo layup at the 14:40 mark. The Blue Hose would knock down a pair of 3-pointers to cut the deficit to seven with 12:29 remaining. Following back-to-back turnovers and three personal fouls committed in six seconds, the Blue Hose would pull within five at the 10:40 mark.
Presbyterian would cut the deficit to four on two separate occasions in the second half, last on a three-point play by Khalid Mutakabbir, putting the score at 48-44 with 4:02 left in the second stanza. After a pair of free throws from Coastal, the Blue Hose would block a shot and Mutakabbir would nail a 3-pointer from the corner to pull PC within three points. Mutakabbir scored a game-high 23 points on 7-of-12 from the field including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Coastal held Presbyterian without a basket for over six minutes holding an early 12-8 advantage until the 9:57 mark of the first half. Presbyterian would go on a 5-0 run to take its only lead on the night with 8:57 remaining in the first half. The Chants answered with a 13-5 run, going into the break with a 25-18 halftime lead, holding the Blue Hose to 23.8 percent shooting (5-of-21) while Coastal finished 11-of-23 (47.8%) from the field.
Raffa reached the 1,000 career point plateau at the 17:57 mark of the first half with a free throw. Raffa now has totaled 747 points in a Chanticleer uniform, scoring 271 as a freshman at Albany University. Raffa has scored in double-figures for the 18 times this year.
Sam McLaurin and Raffa both had game-highs with eight rebounds and Coastal outrebounded Presbyterian 35-25. Coastal entered the game with a +8.9 rebounding margin, ranking sixth in the nation.
Coastal shot 42.2 percent (19-of-45) from the field while holding Presbyterian to 15-of-44 (34.1%).
Coastal returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 when the team travels to Boiling Springs, N.C., to face the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. Tip off at Paul Porter Arena is tabbed for 7:30 p.m.
