Coastal Carolina Suffers Setback Against Longwood
FARMVILLE, Va. Fueled by a dominating 21-7 run in the opening five minutes of the second half, Longwood secured a 76-61 win over Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Lancers' Willett Hall.
Longwood's Kanayo Obi-Rapu scored 17 points as all five Lancer starters scored in double-figures. Tra'vaughn White and Shaquille Johnson each scored 16, Darrion White notched 14 and Lotanna Nwogbo added 11. Longwood shot 59.4% in the second half on its way to a 53.6 percentage for the game. The Lancers scored 42 of their points in the paint and shot 46.7 percent from 3-point range.
Badou Diagne led Coastal Carolina (8-8, 2-4 Big South) with 21 points, while Marcus Freeman recorded an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double. Coastal shot 32.3 percent for the game, including just 16.7 percent from three. The Chanticleers turned 13 Longwood turnovers into 18 points and 14 offensive rebounds into 14 second-chance tallies.
Longwood (5-13, 1-4 Big South) seized control of the game in the opening 5:36 of the second half, outscoring the Chanticleers 21-7 en route to a then-game-high 18-point lead. The 48-30 Lancer lead was fueled via nine points by Allen on four shots, including a 3-pointer. Also contributing heavily to the scoring streak was Nwogbo with five hard-earned points in the paint.
With Longwood leading 55-36, Freeman scored inside was followed by a Jaylen Shaw jumper and two Diagne free-throws to cut the Chants deficit to 55-40 at the 8:26 mark. Following the under-8 media timeout, Coastal pressured the inbound passes of the Lancers and turned two turnovers into four quick points.
LU's Nwogbo scored inside to slow the Chants momentum, but Shaw answered with a 3-pointer to trim the Lancers' lead to 57-47 at the 6:30 mark. The teams exchanged the next eight points before a White free throw and a Johnson dunk pushed Longwood's lead back to 13 points (64-51) with 4:12 to play.
Coastal twice trimmed Longwood's lead to 12 during the next two-plus minutes, but would get no closer than 11 on a Christian Adams layup after the Chanticleer had emptied its bench. Two Johnson dunks in the final 32 second propelled the Lancers to the 76-61 final score.
Coastal trailed Longwood 10-6 after 10 minutes of play before reeling off an 11-0 run, which included five points by Diagne, to take a 17-10 lead with 6:09 to go before the intermission. The Lancers then responded with a 14-6 run to regain the lead at 24-23 with just over a minute to go in the opening stanza. LU's Obi-Rapu capped the half's scoring with his second try of the game from the right corner with 10 seconds remaining on the game clock, sending the Lancers into the dressing room with a 27-23 lead over the Chanticleers.
Coastal returns home to the HTC Center to face Presbyterian College and Big South leading scorer DeSean Murray on Thurs., Jan. 14. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
