ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Redshirt-junior Chad Gray's turnaround jumper with 5.2 seconds left gave the Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team (15-2, 5-0 Big South) a 58-57 win over UNC Asheville (3-11, 1-3 Big South) Jan. 7 in Asheville, N.C. Coastal Carolina now has won 11 games in a row and is the first team in Big South Conference history to start the season 15-2.

Gray, who scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half, hit the 13-footer to give the Chants the 58-57 lead. That answered Sean Smith's three with 33 seconds left that gave UNC Asheville its first lead since 12:29. Matt Dickey's three-pointer with two seconds left was blocked by Kierre Greenwood, moving the Chants to 5-0 in the Big South. Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half, as the Bulldogs led 25-22 at the break. The game was tied 2-2 at the first media timeout. The Bulldogs had their biggest lead of the game at 12:05 of the first half, as Dickey's three-pointer gave UNC Asheville at 12-5 lead. Coastal answered with a 10-0 run, as Danny Nieman's three, the only one by the Chants in the game, at 8:10 made it 15-13 Chants. The Chants shot 24.2 percent in the first half, while the Bulldogs were at 31.8 percent from the floor.

 Joseph Harris was Coastal's high scorer in the first half, scoring five points. Sam McLaurin added five rebounds. For UNC Asheville, J.P. Primm had 10 points, while Dickey added nine.

 Asheville would take a 32-26 lead at 15:49 on a three from Primm, but an 8-0 Coastal run was capped by a Gray layup at 12:48, giving the Chants a 34-32 lead. Gray's layup at 11:41 made it 38-35. He then had back-to-back jumpers for a 44-40 lead with 8:38 left. Greenwood then scored Coastal's next four points as his layup at 7:33 made it 48-42 Chants. Asheville answered with a 6-0 run as Dickey's layup at 6:10 tied the score at 48. Greenwood hit another layup at 4:17 for a 54-48 Coastal lead, but Dickey came back with a three at 3:17, cutting the Chant lead to three. Smith hit a layup at 1:56 to make it 54-53 Coastal. Gray missed a layup and Dickey was fouled going to the hoop at 1:24. He would make 1-of-2 to tie the game at 54. Greenwood was fouled with 1:06 remaining and hit two free throws for the 56-54 lead. That set up Gray's heroics in the final five seconds.

 Gray had three rebounds and a block to go along with 18 points. Greenwood added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Logan Johnson had 11 points and four assists. McLaurin had seven rebounds. For Asheville, Primm had 18 points, while Dickey added 17. Chris Stephenson had seven rebounds, while Primm had six assists.

The Chants shot 36.7 percent from the floor and outrebounded Asheville 40-36. UNC Asheville was 35.7 percent from the floor. Both teams were over 80 percent from the line, with Greenwood going a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.

Coastal Carolina continues Big South play Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m., against Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.
