CCU Falls at League-Leading Louisiana
Lafayette, La. - Coastal Carolina faced the top men's basketball team in the Sun Belt in Louisiana and the Ragin' Cajuns came away with an 81-64 win.
CCU (7-10, 1-3 SBC) fell behind early and trailed by as many as 20 points (62-42) with 12:47 left in the game. It was at that time the Chanticleers put on a run to cut the lead to 10 on three separate occasions, the final time at 71-61 with 4:41 left, but could not get any closer.
ULL (14-3, 4-0 SBC) only hit six field goals the entire second half, as the CCU defense held the Ragin' Cajuns to 35 percent shooting in the second half. It was at the three throw line where ULL made the difference in the score, hitting 23 of 24 charity tosses in the second half alone and finished hitting 29 of 33 (88%) for the game.
Zac Cuthbertson led CCU with 20 second-half points and finished with a game-high 23 points. Demario Beck scored 14 points on five-of-eight shooting and Jaylen Shaw finished with 13 points and five assists.
Beck and Cuthbertson finished with seven rebounds each, but overall, the Chants were out rebounded 38-28. It was only the third time this season the Chants have been out rebounded.
Frank Bartley led ULL with 22 points and Malik Marquetti had 17. Johnathan Stove came off the bench to score 16 and Bryce Washington added 11.
Neither team shot the ball very good in the game with CCU finishing with a 40 percent percentage and ULL shooting 42.
CCU outscored the bigger Ragin' Cajuns 26-18 in the post.
ULL hit seven three point field goals including five of its last six field goals to carry a 43-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Bartley scored 14 points to lead the way as ULL shot 46 percent from the field. The big difference in the opening 20 minutes was rebounding, where ULL grabbed 21 compared to nine for CCU.
Beck scored 10 points and Shaw had eight in the first half. CCU shot 43 percent from the field and hit six three point field goals.
The Chants will be back home for its next two games beginning with Thursday, Jan. 11 when Georgia Southern comes to Conway. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
